From sound to form

Remember last week.(#art77blog Nr.356) when I followed the way of working out the „calabash“-Almost halfway happened a strange thing. I was reading for the first time in my life about art sociology and art politics. What I knew before were the positions of the ideological critical Frankfurter Schule including Walter Benjamin, Jürgen Habermas,  Georg Lukacs and some more- What I read now was quite different. #Howard Becker in his book „art worlds“ focussed on the production of art works and everybody who contributes:to that: galleries, museums, educators, consultors,curators, collectors and so on. It was this importance of PRODUCTION that made me change my mind. Now I tried to perform the calabash in the best way I could, employing the sound only to control the development from time to time.Because I dont use machines, it was a real challenge for my craft as wood carver. And it was so completely new to find words to describe this microprocess. I have to think about that.

Anyhow I felt like back to the roots of art: craft. My next job is to connect the performance of the calabash with the growing sculpture. It will probably be an attempt to balance the formal levels of all parts.

Es ist schon ein Weilchen her, daß ich den Klang von Materialien entdeckte und zum Thema einiger blog posts machte (#art77blog Nr.222, 31. Januar 2020: „Dimensionen des Materials“). Es folgten einige Beiträge dazu. Mit der eindrucksvollste war, als Pit Eitle, künstlerischer Leiter der Tübinger Galerie „Fingur“, mein „Hölderlin Xylophon“ spielte (#You tube..Mein Kanal,  Juli,2020). Damals ging es um das Erforschen der Beziehung von Klängen und Holzformen. Beim Weiter-Bearbeiten meines Lindenholz-Blocks (#“Wie beim Zahnarzt“ -art7blog.axel-von-criegern.de Nr. 349. 1. Juli 2022), fiel mir ein solcher Klang „in die Hände“ ( besser „in die Ohren“).

Beim Klären und weiteren Bearbeiten der offenen Formen testete ich mit einem Klöppel mehrere Vertiefungen und stellte fest, daß der eindrucksvollste Klang aus einer Form entstand, die Ähnlichkeiten mit einer „Kalebasse“ (#Wikipedia ). hatte. Die Musiker werden sagen: „klar!“ Für mich war es ein Fingerzeig, in welche Richtung ich weiter arbeiten kann. Fazit:Manchmal ist  eine Corona-Pause auch zu etwas gut!!!

It’s been a while since I discovered the sound of materials and made it the subject of some blog posts (#art77blog #222, January 31, 2020: „Dimensions of the Material“). A few posts followed. One of the most impressive was when Pit Eitle, artistic director of the „Fingur“ gallery in Tübingen, played my „Hölderlin Xylophone“ (#You tube..Mein Kanal, July,2020). At that time it was about exploring the relationship between sounds and wood forms. While continuing to work on my linden wood block (#“Like at the dentist“ -art7blog.axel-von-criegern.de No. 349. July 1, 2022), such a sound „fell into my hands“ (better „into the ears“).

Clearing and further working the open shapes, I tested several indentations with a mallet and found that the most impressive sound came from a shape that resembled a „calabash“ (#Wikipedia ). would have. The musicians will say: „Of course!“ For me it was a pointer in which direction I can continue to work. Conclusion:Sometimes a Corona break is also good for something!!!

when I realized a couple of days before  that when I started to cut the surface of my sculpture finer, strange things happened . What has been before a play of hills and valleys, tunnels and #vaults shifted to a tower of heads, arms, shoulders, faces and other #anatomic details. I was forced  to go this way. In the evening I repeated  this  experience in a less complex way with pencil and paper. I „hammered“ the paper with pencil-strokes. A round form in the upper left corner #transformed ‚itself‘ in a face. I had no concept how to continue and this personal practice is supported by modern tendencies starting with the #collage of the early 20th century. And obviously the same happens with my sculpture. (By the way- after a visit of the excellent Peter Paul Rubens-Exposition at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, some 17th century details appeared in my drawing).

So what happens here? There are several things coming together. In the 19th century the art world lost its illusion of „true“ humanisme and realisme. We may also say the base of aristotelic esthetic. The summit of this development was reached with abstraction, focusing material and new ways of composition, #space #concepts, #harmony… OK, I love wood and I love to shape it. And the #human figure was already for the young student central subject. #Structure and round forms, texts and #illustrations were of high interest … 

And what are these reflections good for? Today many artists are mainly fascinated of the possibility to express themselves in pure colours and completely #abstract or  to follow trends like ‚#manga’ style, #adventurous art or #POP ART. And no way is better than the other. But there will always  be works we like more  or less. And this is crucial for a #democratic world and art!

seltsame Dinge passierten, als ich anfing, die Oberfläche meiner Skulptur feiner zu schneiden. Was vorher ein Spiel aus Hügeln und Tälern, Tunneln und #Gewölben war, verwandelte sich in ein Gebilde  aus Köpfen, Armen, Schultern, Gesichtern und anderen anatomischen Details. Ich war gezwungen, diesen Weg zu gehen. Abends wiederholte ich dieses Erlebnis auf weniger komplexe Weise mit Bleistift und Papier. Ich habe das Papier mit Bleistiftstrichen „gehämmert“. Eine runde Form in der oberen linken Ecke verwandelte sich in ein #Gesicht. Ich hatte kein Konzept, wie ich weitermachen sollte und diese persönliche Praxis wird von modernen #Tendenzen unterstützt, beginnend mit der #Collage des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Und natürlich passiert das auch mit meiner Skulptur. (Übrigens – nach einem Besuch der ausgezeichneten Peter Paul Rubens-Ausstellung in der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart tauchten in meiner Zeichnung einige Details des 17. Jahrhunderts auf).

Was passiert also hier? Da kommen mehrere Dinge zusammen. Im 19. Jahrhundert verlor die Kunstwelt ihre Illusion von „wahrem“ #Humanismus und Realismus. Wir können auch sagen, die Grundlage der aristotelischen Ästhetik. Der Höhepunkt dieser Entwicklung wurde erreicht mit Abstraktion, Materialfokussierung und neuen Kompositionsweisen, Raumkonzepten, Harmonie… OK, ich liebe Holz und ich liebe es, es zu formen. Und die menschliche Figur war schon für den jungen Studenten zentrales Thema. Struktur und runde Formen, Texte und Abbildungen waren von großem Interesse …

Und wozu sind diese Reflexionen gut? Viele Künstler sind heute vor allem von der Möglichkeit fasziniert, sich in reinen Farben und komplett abstrakt auszudrücken oder Trends wie Manga-Stil, Abenteuerkunst oder POP ART zu folgen. Und kein Weg ist besser. Aber es wird immer Werke geben, die uns mehr oder weniger gefallen. Und das ist entscheidend für eine demokratische Welt und Kunst!

A little bit Elon Musk! / Ein bisschen ElonMusk! (Art77blog.axel-von-criegern.de; Nr.315)

Now

My decision to even my mahagony sculpture without the use of  #rasp and #sand paper based on  studies of late #medieval sculptures.. But how?  In „#Wikipedia“  I found a word, that is  dogmatic: „keine neuen #Schnitte!“ ( no new #cuts). Layers of fine cuts should #smooth the #surface.
Proceeding this way the word  „#autodidact“ came into my mind. Again I used „Wikipedia“ to look for  new meanings. for this traditional word. And the meaning indead is wider in our #computer-determined world. It is a kind of #keyword . There are no #schoolbooks for actual and individual steps and solutions. So you have to ‚teach  yourself‘.
My next ‚sidestep -thought‘ was „how about #routine, #learning and #education ? Does it make sense to develop #curricula which are history the next day?! Wouldn’t it be better to live and learn  more self determind and autodidact?! ‚“That’s what the name of the Genius Elon Musk stands here for. We would begin to believe in our #dreams and #visions and find new #solutions. A propos  isn’t it art that teaches us this every moment and every day?
If you have read some of my 315 (!) posts in #art77blog you may remember that they stand for this thesis.

Die Entscheidung meine #Mahagoni-Skulptur ohne Raspel und Sandpapier zu glätten, wurde durch Studien #¥*spätmittelalterlicher Skulpturen ausgelöst. Aber wie? In „Wikipedia“ fand ich ein Wort, das dogmatisch dafür steht : „keine neuen Schnitte!“  Das bedeutet glätten ohne neue Grate zu schneiden.
Dabei kam mir das Wort „Autodidakt“ in den Sinn. Wieder habe ich „Wikipedia“ benutzt, um nach neuen Bedeutungen für dieses traditionelle Wort zu suchen . Und die Bedeutung verstärkt sich in unserer computerbestimmten Welt. Es ist eine Art #Schlüsselwort. Für konkrete und individuelle Schritte und Lösungen gibt es keine Schulbücher. Man muss es sich also ‚ selbst beibringen‘.
Mein nächster Gedanke  war :„Macht es Sinn, #Lehrpläne zu entwickeln, die am nächsten Tag Geschichte sind?! Wäre es nicht besser #selbstbestimmt zu leben und zu lernen?! Dafür steht hier der Name des #Genies Elon Musk. Wir würden anfangen, an unsere #Träume und #Visionen zu glauben und neue Lösungen zu finden. Apropos  ist es nicht die Kunst, die dies jeden Moment und jeden Tag lehrt?

The day before yesterday I ran a true theory marathon. My wife went to a meeting of her bridge club and I paged through a couple of art books. Soon I found out that Lisa Lee had edited books about Isa Genzken, a german artist, born 1948. In one of them I found an interesting essay about the art of Genzken: „From Modernist Autonomy to the Culture Industry“. (Benjamin H.D. Buchloh in „Isa Genzken ed. by Lisa Lee, October File 17, Harvard Press). Another one a was a catalogue by Isa Lee, „“Sculpture as World Receiver“. Here she refers to a series of Genzken-sculptures. Another thrill was the Auto Biography of Marina Abramovic. I had seen her retrospective at the Kunsthalle Tübingen a couple of days before and with this blend of fotos,videos and films in my mind it was a great experience. Both artists tell us about the esthetic of central human subjects like nature as vital and spiritual‘ dimension(Abramovic) or volume, body, space (Genzken).
What me impressed most of all was the conviction of both artists to make these dimensions accessible to the public through their works and actions. It was the focussing on that here and now that touched me more than their awsome works. I accepted that grateful as support of my own efforts.

Vorgestern bin ich einen echten Theoriemarathon geraten. Meine Frau ging zu einem Treffen ihres Bridgeclubs und ich blätterte in ein paar Kunstbüchern. Bald stiess ich darauf , dass Lisa Lee Bücher über Isa Genzken, eine deutsche Künstlerin, geboren 1948, herausgegeben hatte. In einem davon fand ich einen interessanten Aufsatz über die Kunst Genzkens: „From Modernist Autonomy to the Culture Industry“. (Benjamin H.D. Buchloh in „Isa Genzken ed. by Lisa Lee, October File 17, Harvard Press). Ein weiteres war ein Katalog von Isa Lee, „Sculpture as World Receiver“. Hier bezieht sie sich auf eine Reihe von Genzken-Skulpturen.
Ein weiterer Nervenkitzel war die Autobiographie von Marina Abramovic. Ich hatte ihre Retrospektive in der Kunsthalle Tübingen ein paar Tage zuvor gesehen und mit dieser Mischung aus Fotos, Videos und Filmen im Kopf war es eine tolle Erfahrung.
Beide Künstler erzählen von der Ästhetik zentraler menschlicher Themen wie der Natur als vitale und spirituelle Dimension (Abramovic) oder Volumen, Körper, Raum,Sprache, Kommunikation (Genzken).
Am meisten beeindruckt hat mich die Überzeugung beider Künstler, diese Dimension durch ihre Werke und Aktionen der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Es war die Fokussierung auf das Hier und Jetzt, die mich mehr berührt hat als ihre großartigen Werke. Das habe ich dankbar als Unterstützung meiner eigenen Bemühungen angenommen.

Counterpoint or system error?/Kontrapunkt oder Systemfehler?(art77blog Nr.305)

…sometimes I am too ‚dense’ to finish a post. Obviously half of my text was canceled. So I take now a chance for a short compilation .

My target was a very complex and solid drawing without any subject. Very soon the drawing became too dark and lost its ‚drive‘. No way! I stopped and started to draw some plain, parallel, vertical lines in the lower part of the paper. Between the vertical lines I positioned some abstract signs. It looked like a register. The last task was to connect the two parts in one. I used a grid of lines in the center and put some figurative elements in it. The gap was closed. 
But why at all closing this gap? An answer gives the music with the invention of the „contraposto“, the counterpoint. Johann Sebastian Bachs „Kunst der Fuge“ is a famous example. The basic idea is to enrich music with a second voice acting in a way „against“ (contra) the first voice. A musical revolution, new harmonies were possible now. Decisive is the composition of two tone sequences with different elements.
Maybe this is a most welcome theory for an artist who failed drawing a picture in a homogeneous style. This is what I call „ system error .

But honestly: isn’t that a prolific method of art production??

Manchmal bin ich zu „dicht,“ um einen Beitrag zu beenden. Offensichtlich wurde die Hälfte meines Textes storniert. Also ergreife ich die Chance für eine kurze Zusammenfassung.

Mein Ziel war eine feinlinige Zeichnung. Bald merkte ich, dass die Zeichnung zu dunkel und schwunglos wurde. Ich brach aus und zog in der unteren Hälfte parallele, senkrechte Linien. Die Räume zwischen den vertikalen Linien wurden mit abstrakten Zeichen gefüllt. Es sah aus wie ein Register. Die letzte Aufgabe bestand darin, die beiden Teile auf irgend eine Weise zu verbinden. Ich habe in der Mitte ein Linienraster verwendet und einige figurative Elemente darin eingefügt. Die Lücke wurde dadurch einigermaßen geschlossen.
Warum aber überhaupt diese Lücke schließen? Eine mögliche Antwort gibt die Musik mit der Erfindung des Contrapostos, des Kontrapunkts. Johann Sebastian Bachs „Kunst der Fuge“ ist ein berühmtes Beispiel. Die Grundidee besteht darin, Musik polyphon zu bereichern, indem eine zweite Stimme ‚gegen‘ (contra) die erste Stimme wirkt. Eine musikalische Revolution, neue Harmonien waren jetzt möglich. Entscheidend ist die Zusammenstellung von zwei Zeilen mit unterschiedlichen Elementen.
Vielleicht ist dies eine höchst willkommene Theorie für einen Künstler, dem es nicht gelungen ist, ein Bild in einem homogenen Stil zu zeichnen. Das nenne ich „Systemfehler“.

Aber ganz ehrlich: Ist das nicht eine produktive Methode der Kunstproduktion??

Scrolling through #art77blog you find january 2017 a sequence of posts showing a variety of my #‚alter ego‘. There you find a couple of stories with him as heroe. ( Look also my #book to art77blog pp. 192-202).
Your „alter ego“ may appear as #human, #animal or #predominant form of a sculpture. It may also have #various looks in one #drawing or story.
One day you may notice your alter ego wants to be more than just a general feature of your art. Why not become #King of the world ? Be aware that your alter ego is not the only one that wants to be acknowledged as a #VIP. In this moment you leave the realm of the free art and enter the very tough and limited busyness of #commercial design. But even if you dream of a #children’s book with your alter ego you should know that there is a lot of competition around.

In diesem Moment verlässt du das Reich der freien Kunst und betrittst das sehr harte und begrenzte Geschäft des #kommerziellen Designs. Aber auch wenn du mit deinem Alter Ego von einem #Kinderbuch träumst, solltest du wissen, dass es eine Menge Konkurrenz gibt.

The wild days of my ‚alter ego‘ (art77blog.axel-von-criegern.de Nr. 302)

You can discover in your development as an artist something like a certain repetitive design, a creature (Picasso and the bull) or a structural item (Mondrian and the right angle, Niki de Saint Phalle and her ‚Nanas‘). This features grow with you, become personal  and distinctive. You may call it your native  or unconscious style; I call it „alter ego“.

Looking back I found out that a creature which I invented fifty years ago, was something so personal, familiar and likable, that it was much more than a graphic design, it was my true „alter ego“. This guy, named „Tuwo“ ( derivative from Tübingen) was born 1970 as follower of a comic-heroe, whom I had designed for a local newspaper.Free from any prescriptions or narrative he lived for ten years a young, ‚wild’ life. He understood life as a huge playground. Like a gnome he could change size, weight. Once he had small wings like a putto another time he tried to fly like Ikarus. He wasn’t shy to substitute the figures of an ancient sarcaphogus with little „tuwos“. He and his friends were posing for military parades and wrote illegible letters or even fake documents. One day people were surprised by a huge „tuwo“- monument in front of the town hall. 

And why ‚alter ego‘? Because I created this guy in a period of unsteadiness, when I was exploring my chances as an artist. First of all is he my playmate when playing art. He gives me selfconfidence, keeps quiet and patient and tries to be open minded and friendly. That’s 

why I love him!

Die wilden Tage meines ‚Alter Ego‘ (art77blog.axel-von-criegern.de Nr. 302)

Sie können in Ihrer künstlerischen Entwicklung so etwas wie einen bestimmten Charakter, eine Kreatur (Picasso und der Stier) oder ein strukturelles Element (Mondrian und der rechte Winkel, Niki de Saint Phalle und ihre ‚Nanas‘) entdecken. Diese Eigenschaften wachsen mit Ihnen, werden persönlich und unverwechselbar. Sie können es Ihren nativen oder unbewussten Stil nennen; ich nenne es „Alter Ego“.
Rückblickend stellte ich fest, dass eine Kreatur, die ich vor fünfzig Jahren erfunden hatte, etwas so Persönliches, Vertrautes und Sympathisches war, dass es viel mehr war als ein grafisches Design, es war mein wahres „Alter Ego“. Dieser Typ namens „Tuwo“ (abgeleitet von Tübingen) wurde 1970 als Nachfolger eines Comic-Helden ‚geboren‘, den ich für eine Lokalzeitung entworfen hatte. Frei von jeglicher Vorschrift oder Erzählung lebte er zehn Jahre lang ein junges, ‚wildes‘ Leben . Er verstand das Leben als riesigen Spielplatz. Wie ein Gnom konnte er Größe und Gewicht ändern. Einmal hatte er kleine Flügel wie ein Putto, ein anderes Mal versuchte er wie Ikarus zu fliegen. Er scheute sich nicht, die Figuren eines alten Sarkaphogs durch kleine „Tuwos“ zu ersetzen. Er und seine Freunde posierten für Militärparaden und schrieben unleserliche Briefe oder sogar gefälschte Dokumente. Eines Tages wurden die Bürger von einem riesigen „Tuwo“-Denkmal vor dem Rathaus überrascht.
Und warum ‚Alter Ego‘? Weil ich diesen Typen in einer Zeit der Unsicherheit geschaffen habe, in der ich meine Chancen als Künstler erkundete. In erster Linie ist er mein Spielgefährte beim Kunstspielen. Er gibt mir Selbstvertrauen, bleibt ruhig und geduldig und versucht aufgeschlossen und freundlich zu sein. Das ist es
warum ich ihn liebe!

1968 I created a comic character for the Schwäbische Tagblatt/Südwestpresse. I felt a strong relationship with his temper, way of looking at reality and his reactions. He had only a couple of weeks of public life. Then he had to withdraw in the underground. He changed body shape and clothes. Through the seventies he tried various appearances. It was in the eighties when he had a revival and  became the star of a couple of stories with various success. In the following blog- entries  I want to show the way from an edutainment creature to my actual „alter ego“ and close friend.

I am excited about what happens in our brain when we practice art. The day before yesterday I painted a  landscape in the late afternoon light (fig.1) I tried to catch the hazy atmosphere with a spread of pastel-colors. When I finished, I wasn’t content at all. The result was too light and lacked dramatic tension. Unconsciously I had referred to my basic art experiences with grids (sketch on insta july 25)). But strong enough? Yesterday I made a  new attempt. This time I covered the paper with layers of colors close to the natural impression. I had no particular model in my mind. A major problem was the difference between lower and upper half. To give the upper part weight and structure without destroying the character of ‚sky’. It was a real battle!!(fig.2) But I had definitely a good feeling: „I can make it!“ An hour later I layed both paintings down on the floor to compare the results. And I felt  doubts coming up: was the second approach really better?
